Methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose (MHEC) is a non-ionic, water-soluble cellulose ether derived from natural cellulose through chemical modification with methyl and hydroxyethyl groups. It appears as a white to off-white fibrous or granular powder and is odorless and tasteless. It readily disperses in cold water to form a clear to slightly opalescent viscous solution. The compound is stable under normal conditions and is resistant to enzymes, oils, and many salts, but it can degrade under strong acidic or alkaline conditions.
In terms of properties, MHEC provides excellent thickening, water retention, film-forming, and binding abilities. It also improves workability, adhesion, and consistency in aqueous systems. It shows good thermal stability and is widely compatible with other additives in formulations.
